MUSHROOM FORAGING

Friday the 8th of June 10am-1pm

Saturday the 16th of June 9am – 12pm

Join us on this exciting autumn forage led by avid mushroom hunter Justin Williams as we delve into the forest to learn all about the magical world of mushrooms! We will be meeting early and begin the morning with an educational and informative talk about wild mushrooms, followed by an exploratory foray into the forest.

Participants will need to bring a basket, pocket/pen knife, rain coat (weather permitting) and outdoor-friendly shoes.

  • Cost: R450 per person
  • Included: Notes, recipes, a post-forage picnic of nourishing wild mushroom soup, farm bread, aubergine and mushroom pate, a sweet treat and a warming herbal tea.

NATURE INSPIRED EMBROIDERY WORKSHOPS

WHAT TO EXPECT: Led by textile artist Andie Reeves, come and learn the basics of embroidery, from choosing threads and fabric, creating designs and learning different stitching techniques. Participants will receive a hoop and immerse in an afternoon of stitching your own unique flora-themed design. You will leave with your hoop as well as needle and thread to carry on your new hobby at home.

WHAT IS INCLUDED: We will supply all equipment including hoops, threads, needles and fabric. Tea, cake, botanical cocktails and canapés will be served though out the day.

TEACHER: Andie Reeves has a background in fashion having previously worked as a dressmaker, stylist, sewing teacher and fashion designer. Currently working as a writer/artist/preschool teacher, her art is being exhibited at The Raptor Room and Cavalli Gallery. She is interested in all forms of textile art, especially weaving, embroidery and sewing, and is passionate about teaching others these skills.

BOTANICAL MEDICINE WORKSHOP

Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th of June

“Reconnect with Medicinal Plants”

Facilitated by Zanele Bosch, Manual Therapist, Natural medicine practitioner and student of Bsc Manual Osteopathy and Dr of Botanical medicine.

A two day workshop that re-introduces us to our innate knowledge and connection with plants. The workshop can be joined by those aspiring to work with plants as medicine or those who wish to expand their knowledge in this subject. The program is divided into two half days; allowing enough time to connect, explore and to have hands on participation by preparing the medicinal remedies.

Memory is best awakened through action!

Day 1 “awaken your intuition”

Awaken your intuition

Through connecting with the plants, you will discover their medicinal properties and uses. The learning will happen through your intuition. During the herb walk you will do further self led discovery of the herbs and plants growing at the Good Hope Nursery gardens. This will also be a time for questions and answers and the facilitator will explain further about the medicinal properties of the plants you are curious about. Participants will gather their ingredients to use during the preparation of remedies time.

Day 2 “create with intention” 

10th of June 9:30 – 14:00
Creating with intention

In this day we introduce the “secret ingredient”, you learn about the different ways to prepare plant medicine and about which parts of the plant to use for the various preparations. You will re-visit the ingredients that you will be using to make an oil, a tincture, a balm/salve or cream and then, begin the practical work of making the herbal products.

FYNBOS FORAGING

Introductory half day forage and feasting experience

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:

Aimed at adults but children are welcome to join their parents. Anyone who has an interest in gardening, in wild food, foraging or indigenous edibles. Chefs wanting to discover new ingredients or foodies wanting to play with the diverse wild flavours in our Indigenous edibles. People interested in Fynbos, in vegetable gardening, self sufficiency, in the Slow Food movement or those that just want to have a unique and delicious experience at a beautiful venue with like minded people.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Each course is different according to the season and availability in the gardens and the bush. Explore the gardens, discover and pick edible flowers,weeds and fresh organic vegetables. Forage for indigenous edibles, learn how to sustainably harvest them, utilize them in your kitchen, grow them in your garden and some of their medicinal properties. Learn about wild herbs and how to preserve and prepare them. After snacks and a gathering tour we will get creative in the foraging classroom kitchen and prepare and share a feast.

WHAT IS INCLUDED:
This half day course includes wild food snacks and drinks, a delicious three course lunch based on ingredients foraged, harvested and prepared by the group. You will also receive information notes and recipes on the plants that we will use in the meal.

WHAT TO BRING:
Gumboots or comfortable walking shoes, raincoat/sun hat – suitable outdoor gear. Cameras are welcome. Don’t forget an open mind and your sense of humour!

You can also enjoy a 10% discount in the nursery retail should you wish to purchase any indigenous plants for your garden.

KIDS HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS

26th, 27th, 28th and 29th of June,
12th and 13th of July 9.30am – 12.30pm

Kids holiday fun! Connecting kids back to nature with plant inspired arts and crafts, foraging and harvesting ingredients for cooking and tasting, stories, nature walks, yoga and allowing lots of time for playing.

Each day we will have a different elemental theme woven through the activities. Kids will engage with the outdoors through play, food, movement and crafts, and will leave with something special that they have created during the day.

A simple and healthy meal will be served which the kids will be involved with by helping to prepare, as well as refreshments of fruit and spring water. Packed lunch boxes are encouraged for picky eaters and food intolerances.

  • Tuesday 26th June – Earth: Exploring the gardens, collecting veggies and wild herbs, making clay art.
  • Wednesday 27th June – Water: Sea stories, making pirate hats, beach pebble painting, creating edible flower and wild herb drinks.
  • Thursday 28th June – Fire: Fynbos stories and drawings, collecting kindling and nature pieces for weaving works and making a cooking fire.
  • Friday 29th June – Air: Exploring tree, leaf and grass art, making edible flower petal cupcakes, an outdoor picnic tea party.
  • Thursday 12th July – “What flavour is the season?”: Explore the differences in weather, light and plants, season dependent through story, games, yoga and a seasonal wild flavour meal.
  • Friday 13th July – “Hello Moon” : Explore our relationship to the sun and moon, how it determines our seasons and food through crafts, story, experiments and a seasonal based wild flavour meal.

TASTE YOUR WALK ~ KIDS HOLIDAY WORKSHOP

28th and 29th of June, 12th and 13th July
13:30 to 16:30

Each day will hold an exploration of season dependent wild foods. We will collect ingredients on a gathering session around the nursery gardens and the children will discover how to prepare the new wild ingredients through an interactive cooking class. A different dish will be the focus each day. Stories, games, yoga and crafts will be woven in to enhance the experience.
