Annie le Roux is one of the artists for VERGE – an exhibition about local IUCN red listed species in Knysna, South Africa. Annie’s art is often inspired – or depicts – the Karoo landscape. This artwork was not necessarily inspired by the Riverine Rabbit (Bunolagus monticularis), but I find it apt to add, as they are only found in the Karoo in dense patches of riverine bush along seasonal rivers, and they are critically endangered due to habitat loss from human activities. Find out more about this rare and beautiful rabbit on the EWT (Endangered Wildlife Trust) website, whose Drylands project is focused on researching and protecting the Riverine Rabbit, and read more on this article on Karoo Space, and this article on Farmer’s Weekly.
