Bernheim’s Artist-in-Residence Program

Applications for 2019 residencies are now OPEN with a midnight EST deadline of January 21st, 2019.

For more than three decades, the Artist in Residence program has attracted artists from around the world who seek to use Bernheim as their inspiration. The Bernheim Artist in Residence is awarded to up to four artists a year who are selected to create works within the forest and/or arboretum that are inspired by and potentially installed in the natural world.

The Artist in Residence Program is available to visual artists of all mediums, including sculptors, installation artists, painters, photographers, environmental artists, sound, video, and performance artists. Applicants may be emerging or established artists on a regional, national or international level. Bernheim provides living quarters, a stipend up to $2,500.00 USD and studio space in exchange for a site-specific sculpture, project or exhibition, with at least one mutually agreed upon work of art left to the Bernheim Foundation. Also required is some form of public engagement such as a lecture, workshop or demonstration.

Artists are encouraged to explore ideas that reinforce Bernheim’s mission of “connecting people with nature” and to use their residency to take risks, investigate, experiment, and explore new avenues in their own work. High profile public and private events attract art enthusiasts and media attention, providing the artist an opportunity to advance her or his own skills and career while enhancing awareness of Bernheim’s goals and mission regionally, nationally and internationally.
